What type of broker are you?

Before you rush off to print business cards or lease office space, you need to know what you enjoy about being a broker, what you don’t like and what value you can actually provide to your customers.

In our article, we have a look at the three different types of brokers (which are by no means a reflection of the entire industry!) below:

  • The Salesperson
  • The Technician
  • The Caretaker

Consider the strengths and weaknesses of these avatars to help you better identify your own. If you already have a mentor, you could do this exercise with them to keep you honest and accountable.

The Salesperson

The strengths of this type are:

  • A natural-born salesperson
  • Brilliant at generating leads
  • Charismatic
  • A great talker
  • Has a strong revenue

The weaknesses of this type are:

  • They are disorganised
  • Poor systems and processes
  • They play it fast and loose on compliance
  • Poor post-sales communication
  • Their average profit
  • Poor attention to detail

The Technician

The strengths of this type are:

  • They are process driven
  • They are organised
  • Technically strong
  • A sound revenue and profit

The weaknesses of this type are:

  • Poor sales skills
  • Poor marketing skills
  • Introverted
  • Unwilling to ask clients for referrals
  • Trust and control issues (can be difficult to work with)
  • Neutral communicator (can be difficult to read)

The Caretaker

The strengths of this type are:

  • They are good listeners
  • They love people
  • People love them
  • They enjoy regular communication
  • Average revenue

The weaknesses of this type are:

  • Inefficient
  • Unproductive
  • Difficulty giving bad news
  • Overly friendly with clients
  • Poor profit
